In this Skill Builder webinar, we’ll explore teaching switch skills as an access method for young people with complex support needs focusing specifically on the skills a student will need to make independent choices with one switch.

We’ll look in details at two level descriptors which are often taught together:

POP UP – Press a switch in response to an on-screen cue.

This is where a student will press the screen when something ‘pops up’ on the screen. It is designed to build anticipation and timing skills.

POSITIONAL – Press a switch when an object is in the right place.

This is where a student tracks an object as it moves left to right across the screen, pressing the switch when the object is at a specific place on the screen. This models tracking the highlight box as it automatically moves through a row of available choices in single switch scanning.

We’ll look at examples using the computer plus other examples with switch toys and single message communication devices such as the Big Mack.
