| Bean Sprouts: Changing the philosophy and use of ICT to support students with special needs Following attendance at the Spectronics Inclusive Learning Conference in 2010, I realized I had a mission. Glenroy Specialist School (GSS), one of the largest schools for students with a physical disability in Victoria needed an ICT makeover. Ian Bean, one of many inspirational presenters, threw down the gauntlet and challenged delegates to reflect on and consider what students/consumers were getting out of their ICT experiences and how we as educators had a responsibility to ensure learning experiences were relevant, engaging and meaningful. GSS has approximately 150 students. |

Of this number 2/3 of our student population use some form of assistive technology to access the curriculum and approximately 2/3 of our students are pre intentional/early intentional learners. Following a software audit we realized that we had a well developed bank of ICT software and tools to support students engaging in academic streams. In contrast we had little; appropriate software/programs relevant to the needs of our more complex students, those working at a pre intentional/early intentional level. Our staff group had mixed abilities in relation to familiarity and use of technology. Furthermore, there was some confusion as to what constituted an ICT experience for our students and at what level students were working. Regular PD, development and implementation of student technology profiles, establishing a peer mentor /support network went some way in developing confidence and competencies in staff and student use of ICT. However, a fundamental gap existed in our whole school understanding of the steps and stages that students may move through to develop their ICT proficiencies; matching appropriate equipment and software to enable students to access different curriculum areas. “As teacher responsible for ICT at Priory Woods School Ian worked with pupils aged from 4 to 19. He had a real understanding of the developmental needs of pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties. He worked tirelessly to devise programs and find access solutions so students of all abilities could reach their full potential. “Ian has a very strong reputation in the field of using technology with pupils who have special educational needs. In particular his expertise is in supporting the communication and independence of those who have profound and multiple learning difficulties. |
